Troubleshooting eSIM When You Have No Signal (2026 Guide)
eSIM Not Working? Fix It in 2 Minutes
Something's gone wrong. Your eSIM isn't connecting, your data has dropped, or you're staring at "No Service" after landing. Take a breath — this almost always has a simple fix and you'll be back online in a couple of minutes.
Before you do anything else, answer this one question:

🚫 SCANNED YOUR QR CODE MORE THAN ONCE? STOP IMMEDIATELY. Each eSIM QR code can only be scanned and activated once. If you scan it a second time — or try to reinstall it — you will get an "Unable to Activate" or "Activation Error" message. This is not a fault with your plan. It means the code has already been used.
What to do if you see "Unable to Activate":
- Do NOT scan the QR code again
- Do NOT delete the eSIM from your phone
- Check your SIM settings — the eSIM may already be installed even if it didn't appear to work
- On iPhone:
Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data)— look for your eSIM in the list- On Android:
Settings → Connections → SIM Manager— check if the eSIM is listedIf the eSIM is already installed, it's working — you just need to enable it and turn on Data Roaming. Go to Fix A below.
If the eSIM is not listed and you're seeing "Unable to Activate," contact Ezy eSIM support with your order number. Do not purchase a new plan until support has confirmed the original cannot be recovered.
Fix A — Just Landed, No Connection
This is the most common situation and almost always comes down to one of three things.
Check 1: Is Data Roaming turned ON?
This is the number one cause of eSIM failures on landing. Data Roaming is often off by default and must be enabled before your eSIM can connect overseas.
On iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → [Your eSIM name] → Data Roaming → ON
On Android (Samsung / Pixel): Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Data Roaming → ON

If that was off, turn it on, wait 10 seconds, and you should connect. If you're still not connecting:
Check 2: Is your eSIM selected as the data SIM?
Your phone might be trying to use your home SIM for data instead of your eSIM.
On iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Mobile Data → Select your eSIM
On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Mobile Data → Select your eSIM
Check 3: Restart your phone
A full restart forces your phone to re-register on the local network. Hold power → restart. Wait 30 seconds after it boots before checking signal.
Still nothing? Try toggling Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then back off. This forces your phone to scan for available networks from scratch.

Fix B — Crossed a Border, Lost Signal
When you cross from one country to another, your phone sometimes stubbornly clings to the previous country's network — even when that signal is gone. This is more common on land border crossings than flights.
Step 1: Toggle Airplane Mode
Turn Airplane Mode ON → wait 10 seconds → turn it OFF. This forces your phone to scan for networks in the new country rather than searching for the one it just left.
Step 2: Manually select a network
If toggling Airplane Mode doesn't work, manually pick a network in the new country.
On iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → [Your eSIM] → Network Selection → turn OFF Automatic → select a local network from the list
On Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Network Operators → Search Networks → select a local network
Which network should I pick?
| Country | Networks to look for |
|---|---|
| Thailand | AIS, DTAC, TrueMove H |
| Vietnam | Viettel, MobiFone, Vinaphone |
| Indonesia | Telkomsel, XL |
| Malaysia | Maxis, CelcomDigi |
| Singapore | Singtel, StarHub, M1 |
| Japan | NTT Docomo, SoftBank, KDDI |
| South Korea | SK Telecom, LG U+ |
| China | China Unicom |
| Europe | Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile, local operators |
| USA | Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T |
Pick any network from the list — if it connects, great. If it shows "registration failed," try the next one.
Step 3: If still no connection — Reset Network Settings
This clears any corrupted routing settings that can block connection after a border crossing. It is completely safe to use with Ezy eSIM — all Ezy eSIM plans use automatic APN configuration, so the correct settings restore themselves on reconnection. Your eSIM profile stays installed and your plan is unaffected.
On iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings
On Android: Settings → General Management → Reset → Reset Network Settings
After resetting, your phone will restart. Turn Data Roaming back ON and select your eSIM as the data SIM.
Fix C — Was Working Fine, Now It's Not
If your eSIM was working and has suddenly stopped, run through this quick checklist:
1. Has your plan expired or run out of data? Check the confirmation email you received when you purchased. Your plan validity starts from first connection — not from the purchase date. If your plan has expired or you've used all your data, you'll need to purchase a new plan.
2. Did your phone update overnight? iOS and Android updates can sometimes reset network settings including APN configuration. If your phone updated recently, try Reset Network Settings (see Fix B, Step 3).
3. Is your eSIM still installed? Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (Android) and check your eSIM is still listed. If it has disappeared or you want to try a clean reinstall, you can delete and reinstall your Ezy eSIM on the same device — your plan remains active.
4. Try the basics Restart your phone. Toggle Airplane Mode. Confirm Data Roaming is ON and your eSIM is selected for data.

Fix D — Signal Bars Showing But No Data
This is frustrating — your phone shows signal but nothing actually loads. This is almost always an APN issue or the wrong SIM being used for data.
Check 1: Is your eSIM selected for mobile data?
Having signal bars doesn't mean your eSIM is being used for data. Your phone may be showing your home carrier's signal while trying to use that for data instead.
On iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Mobile Data → select your eSIM
On Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Mobile Data → select your eSIM
Check 2: Check your APN settings
APN (Access Point Name) is the gateway setting your phone uses to connect to mobile data. If it's wrong or blank, you'll have signal bars but nothing will load.
The correct APN varies by country and plan — check your Ezy eSIM confirmation email for the exact APN for your plan. If you can't find it, contact Ezy eSIM support and they'll provide it immediately.
On iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → [Your eSIM] → APN Settings → enter the APN from your confirmation email
On Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Access Point Names → tap + and enter the APN from your confirmation email
If you're not sure what APN to enter, skip this step and go straight to Reset Network Settings below — it often restores the correct APN automatically without needing to enter it manually.
Check 3: Reset Network Settings
If you're not sure what APN is correct, Reset Network Settings (Fix B, Step 3) will often restore the correct APN automatically.
Fix E — Slow Data
Slow data is usually not an eSIM problem — it's a network problem. A few things cause it:
Congested network — airports, tourist areas, stadiums, and festivals put massive strain on local cell towers. Everyone in the area is on the same network. This is temporary and improves when you move away from the crowd.
Wrong network selected — if you're manually connected to a weaker network, switch to a stronger one. Go to Network Selection and try a different operator.
Weak coverage area — some rural areas, islands, and mountainous regions simply have weaker signal regardless of provider. Move to higher ground or a more open area if possible.
Speed throttling — some plans reduce speeds after a certain data threshold. Check your plan details.
The fix in most cases: try a different network (Network Selection → turn off Automatic → pick a different operator) and restart your phone.
The One Thing 80% of People Forget
Data Roaming.
If you take nothing else from this guide, remember this: Data Roaming must be ON for any travel eSIM to work overseas. It's off by default on most phones. Turn it on when you land and leave it on for the duration of your trip.
On iPhone: Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → [Your eSIM] → Data Roaming → ON
On Android: Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Data Roaming → ON
Quick Reference — Problem vs Fix
| Problem | Most likely cause | Fix in 30 seconds |
|---|---|---|
| No signal on landing | Data Roaming is OFF | Settings → Data Roaming → ON |
| SOS Only | Wrong network selected | Manual network selection |
| Lost signal at border | Phone stuck on old network | Airplane Mode toggle |
| Signal but no data | Wrong SIM for data, bad APN or Data Roaming is OFF (check this first) | Select eSIM for Mobile Data and turn on Data Roaming |
| Slow data | Network congestion or wrong operator | Switch network manually |
| Was working, now isn't | Plan expired or phone updated | Check plan expiry, reset network settings |
| Nothing works | Corrupted APN or routing | Reset Network Settings |
When to Contact Support
Try all the fixes above before reaching out — most issues resolve without needing support. But contact your eSIM provider if:
- The eSIM fails to install from the QR code
- The QR code shows "Activation Error" on scanning
- You've reset everything and no networks appear at all in the manual selection list
- Your eSIM has disappeared from your SIM settings
- You've already turned on Data Roaming
When you contact support, have ready: your order confirmation number, your device model, the country you're in, and what you've already tried. This speeds up resolution significantly.
Pro Tips — Avoid Problems Before They Happen
A little prep before your trip eliminates most eSIM issues entirely:
- Install before you fly — scan your QR code at home on Wi-Fi. Don't leave it until you land.
- Scan your QR code once and once only — each QR code is single-use. If the installation appears to stall or fail, check your SIM settings before scanning again. The eSIM is likely already installed.
- Turn Data Roaming ON before you board — one less thing to do on arrival.
- Save your APN details offline — your confirmation email contains the correct APN for your plan and country. Screenshot it before you travel so you can access it without data if needed.
- Save your confirmation email offline — your QR code and plan details are in there. Make sure you can access it without data.
- Restart at every border — takes 30 seconds and prevents 90% of border-crossing signal drops.
- Keep your phone updated — older iOS and Android versions occasionally have eSIM bugs that are fixed in updates.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I seeing "Unable to Activate" or "Activation Error"? This happens when a QR code has been scanned more than once. Each eSIM QR code is single-use only — scanning it a second time triggers an activation error. Stop scanning immediately. Check your SIM settings first — the eSIM may already be installed even though it appeared to fail. On iPhone go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data), on Android go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager. If the eSIM is listed there, it's installed — just enable it and turn on Data Roaming. If it's not listed, contact Ezy eSIM support with your order number before doing anything else.
Why does my eSIM show "No Service" after landing? Almost always because Data Roaming is off or your phone is still trying to use your home SIM for data. Turn Data Roaming on and select your eSIM as the Mobile Data SIM. This fixes it in under a minute for most people.
Should I delete my eSIM if I lose signal? Try the fixes in this guide first — most signal issues resolve without needing to reinstall. If nothing works, you can delete and reinstall your Ezy eSIM on the same device without losing your plan.
Why do I lose signal when crossing borders? Your phone sometimes stays registered on the previous country's network even when that signal is gone. Toggle Airplane Mode on and off, or manually select a network in the new country. This resolves it immediately in most cases.
Does APN affect my connection? Yes — the wrong or blank APN stops data entirely even when signal is present. The correct APN varies by country and plan, so check your Ezy eSIM confirmation email for the right value. If you can't find it, Resetting Network Settings often restores the correct APN automatically, or contact Ezy eSIM support for your specific APN.
Why do I have full bars but slow data? Network congestion in busy areas — airports, tourist spots, stadiums — is the most common cause. Move away from the crowd or try manually switching to a different network operator.
Will resetting network settings delete my eSIM? No. Resetting Network Settings only clears saved Wi-Fi passwords and network preferences. Your eSIM profile stays installed. Ezy eSIM plans use automatic APN configuration, so the correct settings restore themselves on reconnection — no manual APN entry needed. If you do need to delete and reinstall your eSIM, Ezy eSIM allows reinstallation on the same device.
